Labradors are the most popular dogs in the US and in other countries like the UK. The Labrador Retriever, its complete name, is a sweet and loveable breed of dog. Labradors are people oriented, which makes them great companions to humans. They love to play catch and retrieve, and are good guides for blind people.
History
Labs, as most fondly call them, were originally from Newfoundland, Canada. Their original breed was the St. John’s Water Dog, named after their water-loving characterstic. When they were brought to England, they were supposed to be called Newfoundland, but instead were named after the area near it after they discovered that another breed of dog was already named after Newfoundland. Thus the name, “Labrador.”
Appearance
Labradors are a large breed of dog. On average, a lab weighs between 64 to 90 pounds for male, and 55 to 71 pounds for female. They come in different colors mostly yellow (ivory or cream) black, and chocolate.
Their coats are short, thick and oily. This makes them water and cold resistant when exposed to the element. Their heads are broad and their eyes are colored brown or hazel with a black lining around them. Lab ears usually hang near the head, and their bodies are strong and muscular. Lastly, they have a strong and powerful jaw.
There are two lines of labradors, the hunting or field line and the show line. The hunting line are trained for hunting and military operations like bomb and drug detection. Show line labs, on the other hand, are domesticated dogs that make a good buddy for an outdoor activity.
Tips
Labradors are sweet and kind dogs. They love it when you give them attention, and will lick you as a sign of affection (hey that rhymes!) In addition they are gentle, faithful and loving. They are dogs made for humans, don’t you think?
