Canadian Moose

Canadian moose, as creatures, are quite interesting, proudly standing as the biggest of the known deer species in the world. Also known as the Eurasian Elk, Canadian moose are defined by their twig-shaped antlers in males, as well as antler varieties bearing the palmate antler convention.

The 2006 released animated feature, Brother Bear 2, stands to be one of the few mainstream children’s features which had Canadian moose characters, with the film taking after the original story left by the 2003 released Brother Bear.

Featuring the voice talents of Mandy Moore, Patrick Dempsey and Jeremy Suarez, Brother Bear 2 proved to be quite impressive as a Disney sequel title, far from the expectations viewers had expressed on other Disney sequels like Jungle Book 2 or Cinderella 2.

In its telling, the movie featured two Canadian moose characters, whose whimsy and funny personalities did well in adding some significant spice to the movie’s overall plot. Though the personalities of real Canadian moose are not exactly mirrored by the moose featured in Brother Bear and Brother Bear 2, the depiction of Canadian moose as inquisitive creatures was effectively sent out as a message to the movie’s viewers of all ages.

With the Canadian moose known to be found in almost all parts of Canada, estimates have pegged Canadian moose populations to be somewhere between 500,000 to 1,000,000. With moose subspecies also found in Finland, Russia, Sweden, Norway and in the United States, Canadian moose stand as the more active representatives of the moose species in the world.

Koala Bears

Koala bears, as a species, have long been identified as cute cuddly creatures, with countless plushie variations of their likeness found in countless toy stores and fair grounds.

The 2006 CGI-animated Disney movie The Wild, featured a koala as one of its main characters, one whose presence in the movie can be easily understood given how popular koala bears are.
Given their cuteness, questions related to the actual ownership of koala bears as pets have been asked by millions of children more than once. Much to their disappointment, however, the actual feasibility of owning a koala bear as a pet is not realistic for private home owners, but possible for research personnel and animal reservation sites.

Native to Australia, koala bears are creatures which cannot be owned as pets legally. Special permits which require certain prerequisites are required from wildlife centers and researchers, who can’t even indefinitely keep koalas with them throughout their respective life spans.

As animals, koalas are not like cats or dogs, in the sense that they can be readily domesticated. Being nocturnal, they’re not really as much fun as one would presume them to be, with koalas actually being notorious for being grouchy at certain occasions.

That plus their steady diet of eucalyptus leaves makes them quite troublesome to keep as pets for private homeowners, who need to keep a steady supply for koalas to consume. Dedicated wildlife centers have no qualms satisfying a koala bear’s particular needs and requirements in this sense though, which is a different story altogether.

Panthers

Panthers remain to be among the most popular of big cats, with their dark sheens typically associated with the dark mysterious sides of cats.

With Bagheera from the Jungle Book being one of the most recognized panther characters in the world, Bagheera’s popularity has added fuel to the world’s fascination with panthers, with the Disney produced movie of the story doing its part in making them more and more interesting and popular to children.
However, significant confusion over panthers remain to be, with many not entirely sure over what the panther really is – is it actually a species or just a reference name?

Here’s a quick take in helping resolve such confusions.

The Black Panther – Panthers, generally speaking, are not exactly a species, but is rather a name that is typically utilized in defining a “big cat” with black fur.

Jaguars and leopards with dark furs are therefore included in the panther title, with both being big cats and coming with dark hued furs.

Considered to be among the most “elusive of big cats”, panthers are collectively and unofficially classified as endangered species, based on the fact that both Panthers and Jaguars are known to experience declines in their population numbers.

In the Jungle Book movie, Bagheera is described in IMDB as a panther. Given that panthers are native in Africa, the Americas and in Asia, Bagheera’s presence in the movie fits well with its overall plot, staying true to its base location or environment.

With the movie telling the tale of how jungle animals tried their best to convince a human child who had grown up in the jungle to go back to human settlements, the Jungle Book continues to be a story which is loved by many even until today.

Badgers

Badgers, as members of the animal kingdom, are not as popular as Wolverines are, though the two are often linked as distant cousins, given their similarities and tenacities.

Once Upon a Forest, the 1992 animated feature produced by Hanna-Barbera and released by 20th Century Fox, featured a badger character as one of the main protagonists in the film, along with other woodland creatures such as woodmice, hedgehogs and moles.
With questions often raised about how good an idea keeping a pet badger is, a number of exotic pet owners suggest that keeping one can be quite troublesome, with the badger’s particular characteristics and traits.

The “Hassle” in keeping Badgers

In their natural habitats, badgers are known to “wait for food to show up”, which could generally include the consumption of dead meat whenever it is around. Though they are known to occasionally “hunt” for smaller rodents when they encounter them, the “dead meat” aspect to a badger’s diet may not be so easy for pet owners to fulfill.

Also, badgers are known to be unpredictable, and when matched with the fact that they do have long sharp nails, the possibility of being badly scratched is one which pet experts also often raised. Though badgers are generally okay with other domestic pets, instances of a house cat or dog being injured by one are known to prevail, a condition which comes from the unpredictable status of badgers.

More importantly, there are different rules and regulations related to the keeping of badgers as pets, and these rules differ from one state to another.

Those who do manage to secure the proper permits required to keep badgers have to generally pass certification standards which are related to their care and upkeep. From the size and secure state of enclosures, to the ideal habitat where a badger can be itself, factors related to ensuing their security from escaping and proper care and maintenance are regularly checked by authorized agencies.

Though it is not impossible to own a pet badger, their upkeep has led many to rethink their choice in keeping such an exotic wild animal as a pet, something which requires a lot of evaluation in the part of those who have plans of keeping one.

Orangutans

An orangutan took center stage in the 1996 feature, Dunston Checks In, co-starring with Jason Alexander from Seinfeld-fame, Faye Dunaway, Eric Lloyd and Rupert Everett.
orangutans
Telling the tale of how a mischievous orangutan made friends with a boy in a luxury hotel, the movie didn’t exactly become the epic comedy/adventure film flick it was poised to be, but it effectively managed to draw attention towards one of the most easily and readily recognized of apes in the world, the orangutan.

Found in the jungles of Malaysia and Indonesia, the orangutan remains to be one of the most famous of the great apes, known for living most of their lives up in trees. But as they are the most “tree dwelling” or arboreal of the great apes, the orangutan is also the most solitary of the bunch, known mostly for the bond between mothers and their young, with baby orangutans predominantly dependent on their mothers for two years since their birth.

As the orangutan’s redish-hued fur remains to be one predominant orangutan characteristic, the intelligence of orangutans is another trademark sported by the species, with different orangutans exhibiting extensive intelligence markers such as the implementation of tools for various “jobs” and activities, as well as the creation of “beddings” utilizing leaves, barks and twigs.

Being the subject of various tests and studies focused in assessing the orangutan’s intelligence capacities, they have also long been poached by poachers, leaving the great ape with its highly endangered status.

With its name attributed to have been taken from the Malay “person of the forest”, the orangutan is truly one of the world’s most beautiful creatures, the gentle giants of the forest whose endearing existence means a lot in the conservation and preservation of the world’s natural ecology and natural habitats.

Elephants and Tusks

Elephants, apart from their massive sizes, are also known for their tusks, considered to be an essential elephant feature that everyone knows about, regardless if a person in question has actually ever seen an elephant or not.

Though tusks have become readily identifiable elephant attributes, not everyone is aware of the 1980 movie entitled Tusk, telling the tale of a young girl and an elephant who happened to be born on the same day.
african elephant
Based on the novel written by Reginald Campbell, the French language movie has been considered by many as a waste of time, but as it is based on the realities of the threats elephants are faced with in poaching, the movie’s message is far from being that of trivial.

As a part of the elephant’s physiology, tusks are actually the “teeth” of an elephant, defined as their second upper incisors. Unlike how humans and other mammals use their teeth, an elephant uses its tusks for digging, pushing, and other tasks that their trunks can not effectively do.

Thinking of them as “arms” is also apt, since elephants are known to have certain inclinations with which tusk they are more prone to use, with “left-tusked” and “right-tusked” elephants being around. Also, unlike human teeth, the tusks of an elephant is known to grow like how fingernails would grow.

The tusks of elephants are often valued for their ascribed exotic value, with many finding the ownership of real elephant tusk items as a symbol of wealth. Utilized in the making of jewelry items, souvenirs, accessories and other items, elephant populations are threatened by illegal poaching activities, primarily targeting the tusks of elephants as the “score”.

Though elephants are large, their size makes them big targets, which doesn’t really do anything in protecting them from being taken down. Their tusks, an important part that elephants need to have to survive, continue to be hunted by poachers, and as the movie Tusk shares, encouraging the demand for elephant tusks stands to be the best move in protecting them as a species.

Warthog

Warthogs were shown in a different light in the 1994 Disney Animated classic The Lion King with Pumba, the second half of the internationally popular Timon and Pumba duo.

Bonded together under the pretext of being banded as outcasts of their own kind, Timon and Pumba’s funny antics gave significant focus on the meerkat (Timon) and the warthog, one which audiences of all ages and from different parts of the world were quick to follow up on.
Warthog

With Pumba’s rise to fame, the warthog’s popularity as one of Africa’s savanna creatures also rose, no longer pegging them as deadly wild pigs that are wired to only kill what comes their way or eat whatever they find.

Taking their name from the protrusions found on their heads, the “wart” like bumps of the warthog are actually body fat reserves which are often used as a defense mechanism of the species. Male warthogs are known to make frequent use of their “warts” benefits, particularly when two males are engaged in a fight.

Africans, at one point in time, called warthogs as vlakvark, which translates to “pig of the plains”, with their warthog name being one that only recently came up after the first new age naturalists found their way to Africa’s shores.

Being “wild pigs”, the warthog is not often known for their pet friendly attribute, that plus the fact that they are not exactly territorial animals, but are rather described as “home range” animals.

Though Pumba from the Lion King is depicted as a laid back, cool, calm and reserved character, real warthogs are not known for being calm when they feel stressed or threatened. In fact, the warthog is considered as one of the more dangerous animals one could get to encounter in Africa, with a number of poachers still considering them to be prized trophy catches, dead or alive.

Simply put, Pumba’s character is quite the opposite from real warthogs, though this fact hasn’t really made a dent in their popularity as a species.

Elephants

A person’s a person, no matter how small.

That’s the moral of the story of Horton Hears a Who, a film based on the Dr. Seuss book of the name, which tells the story of Horton the Elephant, who encounters a talking speck, which actually turns out to contain the community of Whoville, home to the Whos. Since Horton is able to hear the people of Whoville’s pleas for help thanks to his big ears, he happily does all he can to protect them from harm. However, the rest of the animals around Horton ridicule him for talking to a speck, leaving him to find a way to prove their existence. In the end, Horton and Whos make their existence known, proving that “a person’s a person, no matter how small.”

Elephants picture
The book further cements man’s fascination with elephants. Elephants, recognized as the largest animals on land anywhere on earth, are perhaps the most easy to recognize creatures on earth. As such, these giant animals are among the most beloved creatures known to man. Elephants are divided into 3 species, namely the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the smallest of the 3, the Indian or Asian elephant.

Although their ancient ancestors once roamed virtually all parts of the world, wild populations of elephants are now boxed in continually decreasing swaths of land across Asia and Africa. Ever since the advent of the ivory trade, elephants have been hunted mercilessly for their ivory tusks, which is the most valued source of the material. As such, elephants are at constant threat of poaching, adding to a list of growing problems that include loss of habitat and human encroachment.
